Summary of the 2023 International East Africa Psychology Conference.

October 5th-7th, 2023

We are pleased to share that the 2023 International East Africa Psychology conference was a success, held on Oct 5th-6th at the University of Kisubi in Uganda with an online component. This event connected over 15 locations including communities from Uganda, Kenya, Somaliland, the DRC, Nigeria, Burundi, and Rwanda. Each location hosted unique events, culminating in a combined online session.

Key highlights include diverse and enriching presentations, and opportunities for global connection, with significant participation from various locations– over 70 at the main location in Uganda, 300 in the DRC, 60 in Arua Uganda, 28 in Nairobi, Kenya, 20 Aro Abeokuta Nigeria, over 180 online participants, and many more.

The conference emphasized crucial topics such as culturally relevant approaches to on-ground mental health work, suicide prevention, innovative responses to trauma, and spirituality. The diverse nature of the conference was commended, with storytelling recognized as an effective tool in mental health initiatives.

Looking forward, our main focus is on enhancing connections and support among our international communities. We plan to explore additional funding opportunities and sponsorships to increase engagement and make our work more sustainable. These efforts will not only aid in future conferences but will also support ongoing mental health initiatives. There has also been interest in extending the duration of the conference to increase opportunities for engagement, presentations, and connection.

The role of our partners is crucial in these endeavors, and we look forward to further collaboration in ongoing activities and future conferences.
